Sri Lanka’s Hasaranga Steps Down as T20 Captain After World Cup Disappointment

Sri Lanka’s T20 cricket team has a new leadership vacancy after Wanindu Hasaranga resigned as captain. The International Cricket Council (ICC) reported Hasaranga’s decision, which comes after Sri Lanka’s underwhelming performance in the recently concluded T20 World Cup.

Hasaranga, appointed captain in late 2023, led the Sri Lankan T20 squad for just 10 matches. He reportedly stated his desire to focus solely on his playing role for the national team moving forward.

Sri Lanka Cricket acknowledged Hasaranga’s resignation but emphasized his continued importance. They confirmed he will remain a key member of the team.

With a T20 and ODI series against India looming at home from July 27th, Sri Lanka Cricket has announced they will soon name a new captain to lead the team.
