The selection committee of Cricket West Indies announces squad for World Cup Qualifier 2023, which will occur in Zimbabwe on June 18th. The two-time champions aspire to obtain one of the final two places in the tournament that will be held in India later this year. Before the qualifier event, the West Indies will compete against the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in a three-match One Day International (ODI) series in Sharjah. The squad for these matches, scheduled for June 5th, 7th, and 9th, has also been announced by the selection committee, and they will serve as critical preparation for the qualifiers. Both allrounder Keemo Paul and left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie will return to the West Indies squad for the 2023 ODI World Cup Qualifier in Zimbabwe and the UAE series. Four players will debut in the UAE series, including Alick Athanaze, Kavem Hodge, Dominic Drakes, and Akeem Jordan.
Desmond Haynes, the lead selector, praised Keemo Paul, citing his adaptability with both the bat and ball and recognizing him as a potential game-changer. Meanwhile, Gudakesh Motie’s excellent performance during the Test matches in Zimbabwe earlier this year, in which he took 19 wickets, played a significant role in his selection. Haynes anticipates comparable conditions during the qualifiers and expects Motie to excel.
